If a man would follow, today, the teachings of the Old Testament, he would be a criminal. If he would follow strictly the teachings of the New, he would be insane. ~ Robert Green Ingersoll
When you stop and think about it, there aren’t too many rational people out there who still believe in the Greek or Norse mythology: religions based on Gods who live on mountains or in magical sky cities and who impregnate women on the Earth and meddle in our otherwise boring lives on a daily basis. We recognize those mythologies are nothing more than stories, make-believe that albeit interesting to read should not otherwise be taken seriously.
However, there are several religions today about Gods living on giant mountains or within magical sky cities and who impregnate women on the Earth and who meddle in our otherwise boring lives that we do take seriously, such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. And we take these religions seriously because of scripture written hundreds or thousands of years ago by unreliable sources.
The Junkpile is a place to humorously debate the existence of God, and by God, I do not mean the God of Christianity or Judaism or Islam or Hinduism or whatever. I mean any God, big or small (or in the case of Buddha, a big fat enlightened dude). I will do that by illustrating what I believe to be some of the funniest, most wildly insane stories of scripture coupled with some of the most startling, fact-seeking science humanity has to offer.
He hoped and prayed that there wasn’t an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn’t an afterlife. ~ Douglas Adams
